What is Domain Name?

The domain name provide the easily memorizeble names to the IP addresses which would otherwise be difficult to remember. For example it is easy to remember yahoo.com then keeping 127.123.210.100 IP address in the mind.

The domain name also provide the abstraction to the location of the website. For example the website abcd.com with IP address 123.232.111.123 is located at Jacksonville, FL but for some reason the owner have to move their services to the new server with the IP address 121.121.198.220 in Orlando, FL. In this case owner will simply map new IP address against the domain name abcd.com and whole process will be completely transperent to the website users.

The domain name is commonly divided into the two parts. The right side of the domain name (.com in the case of yahoo.com) is called top-level or first-level domain name. There are limited generic first-level domain names including .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz. First-level domain names are created with the approval of the ICANN. There is also one top-level domain names for each country in the world including .us for United States, .uk for United Kingdom, .ca for Canada. Only Europe (.eu) and Asia (.asia) continent have their own top-level domain names apart from their top-level domain names assigned to their countries.
